Professor Piers Yates clinical interests include revision arthroplasty, infection, implant bearings, and joint preserving surgery of the hip and knee. His trauma interests include multiple injury, periprosthetic fractures, peri-articular fractures and fractures of the acetabulum and pelvic ring.
He has research links with the biomechanical engineering department at Royal Perth Hospital Adelaide University; Basel and St Galen Hospitals Switzerland; Oslo University, Norway; Perth Orthopaedic Institute; Bournemouth, Bristol and Southampton University Hospitals, UK. Where they are publishing over 5-9 papers a year and presenting over 50 lectures per year.
He is interested in implant assessment and design, including involvement with the Australian joint registry. He also consults for several orthopaedic companies and am on at least 4 implant design teams.
He is on the editorial board for 12 orthopaedic and one medical journal, including JBJSAm, Knee, MJA, Hip Int, ANZ, CORR and JBJSBr/BJJ.
In 2018, Professor Piers Yates co-founded the Orthopaedic Research Foundation of WA, with 3 other academics. The aim is to facilitate orthopaedic research across sites and practices in WA and support higher surgical training. This has been highly productive
In 2021 he co-founded the MINT clinic as a multi-disciplinary service looking after periprosthetic infection across Western Australia.
